All About Birthstones

A birthstone is a gemstone or color that represents a month of birth.

There are many different stories about how various stones and colors came to be assigned to months. My favorite story is that they originated with the breastplate of Aaron which had 12 stones inlayed on it. Those 12 stones were later connected to each of the 12 months and the 12 zodiac signs. Ancient practice was to own all 12 stones and wear each stone in its respective month. The stones were thought to have metaphysical properties that would aid the wearer, each property being strongest in its assigned month.

In 1912 the National Association of Jewelers (American) met and official adopted a list of birthstones. That list has been updated over the years. The most recent ‘official’ listing for gemstones that I refer to is one currently provided by the American Gem Society. I also refer to the Swarovski list of birthstones since a large majority of my jewelry features Swarovski crystals.  Both lists are shown below.
